OFFICIAL NAME: State of Bahrain
CAPITAL: Al Manamah
SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT: Absolute Monarchy
AREA: 678 Sq Km (262 Sq Mi)
ESTIMATED 2000 POPULATION 585,000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOCATION & GEOGRAPHY: Bahrain is a group of islands in the Persian Gulf midway between the tip of the Qatar Peninsula and the Saudi Arabian mainland. The island group includes six primary islands which are Bahrain, Muharraq, Sitrah, Umm al Nassan, Jidda and Nabi Salih. Bahrain has a desert topography except for a narrow strip of land along the northern coast. In the interior the land rises gradually towards a central range of hills. Most of the other islands are flat and sandy. A number of fresh water springs or artesian wells are located along the northern coast of the Bahrain. In general, the soil is poor and saline, supporting little or no vegetation. Major Cities (pop. est.); Al Manamah 140,400, Ar Rifa 46,000, Al Muharraq 45,300, Madinat Isa 34,500 (1991). Land Use; pastures 6%, agricultural-cultivated 3%, other including deserts and marshes 91% (1993).

MODERN HISTORY - WWII TO 1993: During 1861 to 1971 the islands were under British protection. In 1971 Bahrain became fully independent and in 1968 as well as 1979 Iran pressed its longstanding claim over Bahrain. In 1981 Bahrain became threatened by Iran's claims of sovereignty over the islands through a failed coup which was believed to be linked to Iran and resulted in 73 arrests. In the same year and in response, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar joined with Bahrain to form the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In 1990 Bahrain expanded its military bases following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and Britain's defense secretary, Tom King, announced that three British minesweepers as well as a squadron of Tornado fighter jets would be based in Bahrain as a form of self-defense. In Aug. 1991 a territorial dispute with Qatar over the Hawar Islands flared when gunboats exchanged fire. On June 20, 1992 Bahrain became the first Arab Gulf nation to urge better relations with Iraq since the end to the Gulf War. On July 3, 1992 the Hawar Islands dispute between Qatar and Bahrain entered a new phase, with Qatar rejecting Bahrain's demand for a joint petition to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and continuing with its own unilateral bid to recover the islands. In July 1992, Crown Prince Sheik Hamad ibn Isa al-Khalifah announced his desire to establish closer ties with Iran. Following the death of the Shiite divine Grand Ayatollah Abolqassemm al-Khoei on August 8, 1992 there were massive processions for five days. On Dec. 16, 1992 the emir announced the establishment of a consultative council to allow greater citizen participation in the country affairs. On Jan. 16, 1993 the council met for the first time, following which the emir granted an amnesty to eight political prisoners and pardons to eleven exiles in an attempt at healing the rift between the Sunni and Shiite Muslims. In April 1993 Bahrain asserted its claim to the Hawar Islands by announcing a territorial waters claim of 12 nautical miles and its right to exercise its sovereignty over the area.

Aluminium business recap in Bahrain
'A first step in an ambitious event: Aluminium Middle East 2005 and APPA 2005 to promote investor's interest in the aluminium sector in Bahrain brought excellent results'

These were concluded at the three-day, first-ever Aluminium Middle East 2005 exhibition held at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, between 5th and 7th December 2005.

Following the successful outcome of this event, a recap meeting was held by Bahrain Convention and Exhibition Bureau (BCEB), delegates from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, UNIDO, ALBA and other major key players in Bahrain's aluminium industry, met last week at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. The focus of the meeting is to establish and enhance a continued expansion of the aluminium downstream industries in Bahrain and the Middle East as well as to further develop cooperation of industries throughout the world.

The Ministry of Industry & Commerce also decided after receiving positive indications of interests from major industry players to organize numerous overseas Trade Missions and Exhibitions to Hannover Messe 2006 and Aluminium Essen 2006 (Germany) along with Aluminium China 2006 to be held in Shanghai. The Ministry foresees that by having Bahrain present at some of the biggest fairs in the world will raise the Kingdom's distinctiveness and standard, thus, to be able to promote Bahrain's Industries and concurrently encourage foreign investments and technology transfer to Bahrain and the Region.

The meeting also confirmed Bahrain's role as a regional centre for business cooperation within the GCC region. UNIDO had earlier designated Bahrain as the focal point for the Arab region for a capacity-building programme for promotion of industrial investment. The Forum has been the successful beginning for further action.

Further more, to extend and promote the potential Industries of the Kingdom, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce & BCEB are also setting up the Bahrain Permanent Exhibition Centre (BPEX) to showcase a wide range of different industries to regional and international investors which will cover the Heavy Industries (i.e. Aluminium, Oil & Gas, Engineering, etc.), Light Industries (i.e. F&B, Medical & Pharmaceutical, Construction etc.) and Business Service sectors (i.e. Banking, IT, Logistics, etc.). BPEX is expected to be in full operation by early 2006.
The meeting ended in an agreement that a local and regional Aluminium Association should be established, thus will enable the Aluminium Industry to establish better ties with the global aluminium industry. Bahrain will take the initiative to establish a Secretariat for the local Aluminium industry which will eventually take the lead in the creation of an Aluminium Association.
Bahrain wins Financial Centres of the Future award
Bahrain has won a prestigious award in recognition of the country's leadership status as a key international financial center.

The Kingdom has been named winner in the Middle East & Africa category for the Financial Centres of the Future Awards 2005 by the UK-based The Banker magazine, a sister publication of the Financial Times.

The awards, presented for the first time this year, celebrate the jurisdictions that have made the greatest strides in terms of growth and infrastructure in the past year. The awards have been published in the December 2005 issue of The Banker.

'Bahrain is the region's leading financial center and the Gulf's longest established commercial and business center. Many years of development and experience give Bahrain a strong reputation as a business and financial center,' says the magazine. It notes that Bahrain offers a liberal and low-tax economic environment and is undergoing a series of important political and economic reforms.

The awards, presented in four geographic categories which also included Asia & the Pacific, Western Hemisphere and the Caribbean, were based on a number of criteria, including the rate of growth of the financial services sector; regulatory quality and supervisory standards; infrastructure and business support services; and overall political and economic stability of the jurisdiction.

'The BMA is delighted to be the recipient of the Financial Centres of the Future Award,'

said Dr Abdul Rahman Saif, Executive Director, Corporate Services, at the BMA.

'Bahrain's continued development as a mature and sound international financial center is a matter of pride and encouragement for all of us at the BMA, as we strive to ensure that Bahrain maintains its unrivalled reputation. The BMA also strives to maintain its own reputation as the most highly regarded and innovative regulator in the Middle East region.'

A cornerstone of BMA's policy has been to implement international best practice to all aspects of financial supervision, he pointed out. In this regard, the BMA continues its work on a major project to review and upgrade, where necessary, the regulatory framework for the entire financial services industry, covering banking, insurance and the capital market. The work on the regulatory framework is matched by a new integrated licensing framework, which the BMA intends to finalise in the coming months.

The BMA complements its role as regulator with market development initiatives, which continue apace. A new Trust Law is currently awaiting implementation and the recently issued takaful (Islamic insurance) framework, which is part of BMA's Insurance Rulebook, issued in 2005, is unique. In addition, the BMA continues to pioneer innovative structures for Islamic debt market instruments.

'All this and other BMA initiatives, we hope, will continue to reinforce Bahrain's status as the pre-eminent financial center and ensure the continued expansion of the country's financial services industry,' said Dr Saif.
